Postponement Of Sculpture Installation: Art Week Events to Celebrate The ‘Seven Grandfathers Teachings’

The City of Marquette announces the postponement of the installation of the 'Seven Grandfathers Teachings' sculpture by indigenous artist Jason Quigno. Due to logistical timing of transportation and Quigno's request for more time to work with the stones, the installation has been rescheduled for later this summer.

Despite the deferment of the sculpture, the Marquette community will still be introduced to the Seven Grandfathers Teachings through several engaging events on Friday, June 28th:

  • Seven Generations Activity Booth: From 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM at the Seven Grandfathers Public Art Installation Site (base of the new Spear Dock Piers, 400 block of S Lakeshore Blvd.) – Indigenous led space that bridges communities through interactive art pieces and resource sharing.
  • Evening Performance and Laser Light Show: At 9:45 PM, the Teal Lake Singers will perform traditional Ojibwe drum songs at Mattson Lower Harbor Park. This will be followed by a laser light show projected onto the Ore Dock, produced by Indigenous artists and storytellers in collaboration with Fresh Coast Light Lab. The event is free and open to the public. Families and friends are encouraged to bring their own seating and picnics.

The 'Seven Grandfathers Teachings' sculpture will be the City’s first major Indigenous public art installation and will serve as the centerpiece of the new City Shoreline Cultural Trail. This Trail, honoring our community's diverse cultural heritage, will connect key sites along the City’s shoreline.

  • Community Engagement Sessions for the Cultural Trail project. Join us at Marquette Harbor Lighthouse Park on Thursday, June 27th at 10:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 7:00 PM, to learn more about the project and share your input.

These events are part of the City of Marquette Art Week (June 24-29), a celebration of community through free arts and culture events. For more information on the Seven Grandfathers Teachings Installation, City engagement opportunities, and other Art Week events visit www.mqtcompass.com.
